Pivotal decades

The business continued to grow until the outbreak of WW2 when it was forced to adapt to support the war effort once again by making high quality gas mask cases in the same leather used to make the uppers of the clogs.

Post war, the company continued to develop their expertise in the production of football boots. Bill recognised that football boots for children were becoming increasingly popular as part of the school uniform. The production of a football boot was highly technical. It featured leather soles tacked to the upper and individually made leather studs for grip. Each stud was made using a number of layers of precision cut leather.

In 1958, Bill saw an opportunity to make his production process more efficient and bought an Italian made vulcanising machine to semi-automate the welding process for football boots.
